We had struggled to have a genuine 2nd XI for the last couple of seasons (i.e.. without asking footballing mates & others to play), its all the more frustrating when our first 3 weeks of Youth Coaching have clocked 54, 54 & 56 attendees.
What the answer is who knows, I still think that the erosion of Sunday Friendly matches has not been a good idea, I always thought it was a stepping stone for some youngsters to playing with the "big boys", we still have a handful of Sundays against Touring sides, three of which have been visiting us since 1965, 1982 & 1983.
Maybe in the lower Divisions more regionalisation would be an idea ?, if our 1sts were to get relegated this year looking at Division 3 we could potentially be playing Overton, Prees, Fenns Bank & Trysull, which wouldn't have bothered us older types years ago, but the "yoofs" seem to not enjoy travelling such distances to play cricket and chirp up "I can play if its at Home".......
Sadly with players giving out such negativity, senior players like myself (in my position as Groundsman for 32 years and a player for 41), you start to think, well if that's their attitude why should I give up my time (and in my case using Holidays for BCCC activities) perhaps I'll cut the outfield once a week instead of the usual 2/3 times a week.

Quite agree with HHB, just my view also that the penalties for concessions are too low and the whole club should be penalised for all forfeits. Very unfortunate for the opposition when they're let down, usually at the last minute. Bishops did the right thing by tackling their problem early.

It's ironic that all the reserve teams are going to be mixed into one big league next year, because all the concessions so far have come from reserve sides which means it's likely to affect a lot of 1st XIs who would then find themselves sitting idle on some Saturdays.

The boom in adult playing numbers in the league over the past decade is now firmly in decline. Some clubs are flourishing though (both at adult and also junior level). Will it be the case that we are looking at a smaller number of clubs? That will be sad in many ways as part of most people's enjoyment of the sport is visiting other grounds in different parts of the counties.
Solutions?

Its just my opinion but the penalty is too light, doesn't change the fact that village cricket is struggling for commitment across the board by the looks as a lot of second/third teams are conceding more than they play and in some cases I've seen first 11's go with 9 or 10 already, and they were larger clubs with multiple sides!
But if the penalties were larger on the team that concedes and even stronger stance still, deduct points from the other teams in the club it suddenly becomes a club problem with every member trying to find a friend or family member to fill a gap rather than the poor old second or third team skipper on a Friday night left to fill a few slots on his/her own.

But back to the season, yes some very low scores to start the year but good to see some clubs thriving, allscott and pontesbury doing well as newly promoted clubs in div 1 and Ellesmere and Willey looking strong in Div 2, Prem is a bit of a lottery with a side getting a bye every week but same playing field for everyone i guess!

I find it shocking the amount of teams conceding games this early in the season.
Not a great advert for Shropshire cricket when two or three of our "premier" clubs cant field all teams entered.
Some very low scores in the first 4/5 weeks but on the flip side, some decent bowling figures. (Good bowling or bad batting?)

Hows everyone finding the season so far? Some strange transfers, oddly weak teams and obvious need to increase the penalty for concession are what springs to my mind so far!!

I hear it's at end of 2018 the BL is going to 24 and a big announcement will be made soon. But the t20 thing is definitely on the table .  Question is what is the point in any team going up this year when they know it will only be for 1 year even if they win D3 next season

Blimey they didn't leave that up for long, it's not on their site tonight!

First time the BL have said anything publicly on the subject and it's taken down three days later. Just over three months since the narrow vote was taken, the ECB have been shoved right into leading a fresh assault.

Quite agree it's a zzzzzzzz read but the message is clear and the days of four divisions are clearly numbered.

Good responses on here to my original post. Just a question now of how many clubs we're going to get back in two or three years' time.

It's all such a shame though, I can't see any decent reason why the field of dreams is going to be sliced in half.

It's no longer on the back-burner, apparently....

http://www.birminghamleague.org/article/statement-on-the-future-of-league-cricket-in-the-west-midlands_24110

What a lot of management-speak (ungrammatical) guff.

"Collect stats and figures to evidence the why" ("The Why?...")

"Articulate the downturn in the worth of the Birmingham League brand."

"Ensure it will be an engaging process"

Zzzzzzzzzzz
